All of us, wherever we are in the world share one common hope “to live in a better country.” We dream of honest governments, peaceful streets, and leaders who truly care for the people. We want leaders who serve with integrity, compassion, and wisdom. Leaders who do not only speak beautifully, but act with sincerity. Leaders who fight for the poor, value education, protect the weak, and lead not for power, but for purpose.

But the truth is, the failure of a nation is not always just about the leaders. Sometimes, the bigger problem lies in the people who gave them the power to lead in the first place. Yes, it’s also us, the citizens.

Some leaders were voted into power despite having criminal records, no experience in public service, or a long history of corruption. Some had no real knowledge in governance, some were even actors or celebrities with no plans except to use their fame to win votes. Yet, people still chose them. Some out of admiration. Some out of blind loyalty. Some choose leaders because they were given free food, shirts, or money during the campaign.

Some voters didn’t even bother to research. Some don’t even care who they vote for—they just follow what others say or pick a name they remember the most. Some even treated elections like popularity contests, forgetting that these choices will affect the lives of millions—not just for a day, but for years.

And when everything starts falling apart—when we feel the weight of bad governance, poor decisions, and rising hardships, many start to point fingers at those in power. But we must also ask ourselves: weren’t we the ones who put them there?

We cannot expect leaders to be better if we, ourselves, do not take our role seriously.

Real change doesn’t begin in the palace, or in the government halls. It begins in the minds and hearts of every citizen. It begins with caring. With being responsible. With choosing wisely. With standing for truth even when it’s not popular.

If we want a country led with love, we must first be people who vote with love, for the truth, for justice, for what’s right. If we want honest leaders, we must be honest citizens. If we want leaders who serve, we must also serve our country in the way we choose them.

Because in the end, the leaders we have are a reflection of who we are as a people.

If we want leaders who truly serve, we must first be citizens who truly care.
